You may need as little as fifteen minutes to complete it, and you can do it shortly before going to bed. Make a list of everything that needs to be done, and then arrange the items in order of importance on the list.

3. Make your bed
Not every pattern requires a significant shift, and the most significant gains can occasionally come from the smallest of adjustments.

Nathaniel Kleitman, a sleep scientist, says that after 90 minutes of hard activity, our minds naturally seek a break.

Another option is to take pauses as needed.
Listen to your body and take at least 90-minute breaks from your work.

It’s too easy to just put your feet up at the end of the day and watch Netflix try to relax.

The blue light that comes off of our screens can throw off our internal clocks and make it harder to fall asleep.
Dr. Adrian Williams, a professor of sleep medicine, says the following:
“Light has a small effect on hormonal responses during the day, but its biggest effect is in the evening, when it may stop melatonin from being released and make it take longer to fall asleep.”
Even though it’s best to stop using screens a few hours before bed, most experts agree that you should stop at least 30 minutes before bed.
If you want to make it even easier to get into this habit (and give yourself some extra benefits), just leave your phone outside the bedroom.
This way, you won’t be tempted to check it, and you won’t have to deal with a screen full of notifications when you wake up.
8. Drink more water every day.
Water is a miracle tool for getting things done. But when we’re tired, most of us don’t go to the water cooler. Instead, we go to the coffee machine.
Caffeine has its place in our workdays, but it’s not the only thing we need.
One of the best things you can do every day is to drink more water. Our bodies need water to work, and when we don’t drink enough, we don’t just get a dry mouth. We also lose energy, focus, motivation, and productivity.
Make it a habit to drink water during the day to make sure you stay hydrated. Carry a water bottle with you to remind yourself to drink more or to set a goal for the day.
9. Maximize Your Calorie Burn
Not all forms of cardio work. Studies show that most people miss the fat-burning zone because they either work out too hard or too slowly.
I recently tried out six different cardio workouts, from workouts that went viral on YouTube to the treadmill, to see which one was the best.
What were they? The best workout we’ve had in over a year would have helped us lose 23 pounds more than the worst. Using our free time to improve our fitness plan was a very useful thing to do.

10. Today, walk 1 percent further
A recent study in the journal The Obesity Society found that adults who lost 30 pounds, kept it off, or kept losing weight took 12,000 steps every day.
Adults who were overweight only walked 6,500 steps.
Putting money into a fitness tracker is a good thing to do.
We’ve found that they do a good job of making us move around and stand up more.
We personally recommend the Apple Watch or a cheaper version like the MiFit band.
11. Eat a few more vegetables each day.
I’ll let you in on a little secret: it’s hard for many vegetarians to eat enough vegetables (me included).
Doesn’t that sound crazy? But it’s just as easy for us vegetarians to get pasta and bread as it is for you.
Even if you only eat one meal without meat a week, you’ll get a lot out of it.
It’s a no-brainer if you want to cut your carbon footprint, lower your cholesterol, and improve your microbiome.
12. Get the most out of what you eat.
Three meals a day or six? What kind of diet should I eat for my body? Carbs or no carbs?
There is a lot of confusion about diet, which is understandable since everyone is different.
A good comparison is to think of your diets over the course of your life as your wardrobe.
You’ll wear clothes from one designer sometimes and another sometimes. A diet that helps you lose weight now might not help you lose weight in a few years.

16. Make healthy choices earlier in the day
Did you know that you make 35,000 decisions every day? Most of them are small things, like when to use the bathroom.
But some are more important, like when to ask for a raise or how to work out.
Your brain gets tired of making decisions during the day, so it’s important to get your healthy meals, workouts, and bottles of water in (or at least on the schedule) as early in the day as you can.

17. Temptation bundling
Temptation bundling is one of our favorite ways to stay on track with healthy habits.
Pairing a boring task with something you enjoy is at the top of our list of things to do to get 1% better every day.
For example, I like to watch cooking competitions while I cook, and I only listen to my favorite podcast while I do the dishes.
This makes me offer to do the dishes first, but my podcast now starts before I even get to the sink.
18. Get 1% more sleep tonight
Since the average American adult sleeps less than 7 hours a night, it’s not surprising that people are ruining their diets and getting older faster than ever.
We can’t stress enough how important sleep is, so start keeping track of your sleep hours and quality to see where you stand.
Yes, getting more sleep IS a useful thing to do.
We suggest using free apps like Pillow or letting your wearable track your sleep.
Once you know your starting point, you can start trying out different ways to improve the length and quality of your sleep by 1%.

19. Don’t get too tired
Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) said that burnout is a medical condition.
People often call it the “silent destroyer” because who wants to tell their boss they’re too busy?
You don’t necessarily have to work crazy hours to be burned out.
Take a hard look at your health and job if you are tired and not interested in your work. Burnout should not be taken lightly.
20. Set deadlines and priorities
When you plan your day or week, it’s important to make a list of priorities so you can do the most important things first.
We can easily get caught up in all the little things that need to be done. These little jobs can quickly add up, leaving you with less time to do the important things.
This happens a lot with housework. You think you’ll just quickly fold the laundry, start another load, make dinner, and fill out some forms before you go to the store to buy that birthday present.
But all of these “mini-tasks” add up quickly, and before you know it, you only have 20 minutes to get to the shops before they close, so now you’re rushing around and panicking! Everyone has been there…
Setting priorities for what you really NEED to get done is so important, both for the week and for each day. This will help you focus on your most important task and make sure you finish it before moving on to others.
I’d like to use my weekly planner to make a list of the three most important things I need to do this week to make sure I get them done.
You might also want to make a list of your daily priorities to help you stay on track. By setting these deadlines, the task won’t take forever to finish.

Even though it’s a good idea to write down your home projects, sometimes just thinking about starting them can be too much.

For example, if one of your projects is to organize the garage, there are quite a few steps involved! You may have to:
- remove rubbish declutter
- work out what’s being kept
- sell things on eBay.
- You can hire a skip to get rid of bigger things you don’t want.
- Organize items being kept into categories
- Buy large tubs to make garage sections.
- Make labels, clean, etc.
Instead of thinking you can organize the whole garage in a few hours, break the job down into smaller steps.
This way, you know exactly what you have to do and can get through bigger projects more quickly.

23. Get rid of time-wasting things
Here’s a good one! Learn how to detect and get rid of time-wasting activities. It’s crucial.
In fact, it’s one of the top tips that I recommend on the “the productive things to do during the day” list.
We can get into a daily routine where we do the same things over and over again.
You could get back a lot of time if you took a good look at how and where you spend your day and which time-wasting things could be cut out. Things like:
- Check your phone every time it notifies you of something new. You may want to turn off notifications and only check your phone at certain times of the day.
- A few pieces of clothing here and there need to be ironed. After a few loads of laundry have been washed and dried, you might want to do all the ironing in one or two sessions a week.
- Having to deal with paperwork tasks every day? Try setting aside one day a week for all paperwork tasks.
If you have to run errands every day, you might want to choose a day of the week when you’ll already be out and about to do all of them at once.
Sorting your laundry before every wash — think about setting up laundry baskets with different colors so the whole family can help sort before washing.

25. Put things back where they belong.
If you and your family make it a habit to put things back where they belong, it will be much easier to clean the house and keep it from getting too messy.
If you have piles of stuff all over your house (like on your kitchen table, benchtops, or front door), make a note of what they are and make it your mission to find a place for them.
For example, if papers keep piling up on the benchtops, a command center will give you a place to put them all where they won’t be in the way.
If the kids’ bags, hats, and shoes are always in the way, you might want to set up an entryway zone where everything has its own place.
26. Give yourself time!
First of all, you can’t be super productive and efficient every single day if you don’t take time for yourself.
Taking a break is so important. Whether it’s time to yourself in the morning, when you work out, when you have some free time in the evening, or when you have some alone time on the weekend, it’s important to take a break.
You should put yourself first, even before your kids, your partner, or your friends.
If you fall apart, that won’t help anyone.
You deserve that time for yourself, and it will make your life a lot easier.
In fact, I’m going to take my own advice and book a massage for myself.

Have a master “TO DO” list at the front of your calendar for things you want to do but don’t have a specific date to do them by.
If you’re making plans for the day and have some spare time, look at this list and add something to your schedule.
Try to do one of these things every week or month, depending on how big it is.
That way, you’ll not only get the day-to-day things done, but you’ll also be able to work on your long-term goals.
Making a list is the best way to feel like you’ve gotten as much as possible out of the day.

28. Do things when they should be done
First, make the most of your day and don’t waste time when it’s quiet.
Try to go shopping when the stores first open or near the end of the day, when people are usually less busy.
Second, figure out what your best daily routine is. Would evening work best?
Plan to do some things after the kids are in bed.
Do what works best for you, and you’ll be more likely to stick with it. Don’t try to copy what works for others, because everyone is different. Make your own plan, and you’ll see results.
29. Put things in groups (AKA Batching)
Group things together so you can do them in less time. For example, instead of doing four errands on different days, you could do them all in one trip to the store.
This is also true when you are focusing on one thing at a time, because if you group tasks together, your brain is already trained to do that task, so it takes even less time to get them all done at once.
To make the most of your time, you can also think about grouping things that are not the same.
This means that if you can walk or ride a bike to the store, you should do so, so you don’t have to find extra time in your day to work out.
(Walk the kids to school, then run home. Run errands in town, but drop something off at a friend’s house on the way home to save yourself a trip.)
Use your imagination, because that’s when the magic happens.
30. Feel Progress
If you start getting things done, you’ll be more likely to want to keep going.
So, have a list of quick tasks on your TO DO list that you can do first thing in the morning, and try to do as many as you can in the first half-hour.
This big jump forward will really get you going!
31. Brain Dump
This will help you get ready in the morning. On a piece of paper, make two columns. Write down what you are thankful for on one side.
On the other hand, write down everything that’s bothering you.
Write down your to-do list, everything you know you need to do, upcoming events, things you want to do, and any other thought that comes to mind.
You don’t need to write it in any particular order; just write everything down.
It’s amazing how much brain space we use up just trying to remember everything. Once it’s on paper, you can see what needs to happen and make a list of things to do.
32. Share your goals with someone.

Now they are the people you have to answer to.
I don’t know about you, but if I tell someone else about a goal, I am WAY more likely to reach it. You can make this as public as you want.
You could share a personal goal with your sister.
Or, you can start a monthly blog series called “4 Simple Goals” where you share your goals for the month and then your progress. You can choose who to tell, but you should tell someone.
33. Make it a habit to set goals.
You might think that the whole list of things to do is annoying, cheesy, or too much.
Figure out what helps you. Don’t worry if it seems strange or even a little scary at first.
It will start to feel like something you do every day.
And if you miss it, you’ll start to feel strange. Like brushing your teeth, it will become a habit.
Having to remember to do this simple task twice a day is not hard or annoying.
But you probably had to be reminded a lot by your parents at first before it became a habit. Make setting goals a regular and good part of your daily life.

Multitasking is a myth, whether you believe it or not. I know how frustrating that can be for someone who just wants to get more done.
The truth is that our minds can only pay attention to one thing at a time.
This means opening a second browser tab while you wait for the first one to load (I’m guilty!) won’t help you get more done during the day.
Clear out the mental and physical clutter so you can focus on that one thing and finish what you start.

Adding vitamins to your daily routine will help your diet.

All of these skills take time and dedication to learn. But you don’t have to give up a lot of time. Lessons on Duolingo take between 5 and 10 minutes to finish, for one.
38. Set out your clothes for tomorrow before you go to sleep.
During his time in office, Barack Obama famously said, “I only wear gray or blue suits because I’m trying to make fewer decisions.”
I don’t want to have to decide what I’m going to eat or wear. Because I already have too many things to decide.”
Now, we’re not saying that you should wear the same thing or the same kind of thing every day of the week.
But if you decide what to wear the night before, you won’t have to make as many decisions in the morning, when you might still be sleepy.
39. Every night, go to sleep at the same time.
Try to build a daily bedtime routine and improve your sleep habits and cleanliness by keeping up with a consistent bedtime every night. On weekends, of course.
Does this truly need to be done? Definitely, if you’re having difficulties sleeping. You’ll feel more rested and mentally healthier if you stick to this practice.
40. Investigate your expenses
That’s exactly what I was going to say.
How much money will I have to spend?
Nevertheless, if you try this practice, you may be surprised.
I dare you to look back at six weeks’ worth of bank and credit card statements.
Which four or five expenses from your budget would you like to slash the most?
Your budget’s expense leaks may astound you.
For example, keep an eye out for the seemingly insignificant costs that are all too easy to overlook:
- Subscriptions that were never used.
- Memberships for unused gyms
- Forgot to cancel your free trials
- Excessive consumption of restaurant food
- Spend a few minutes putting together a monthly budget.
